The years I spent gathering it and the ways I spread it as salve on people’s pains—from these I uncover something unexpected: knowledge is not as weighty as something else. This is true also for caring as it goes distant. The larger sweep, from ancient through us to future, gathers these smaller knowledges and carings into a thrilling.
